Founded in 1958, Ningxia University is supported by Project 211 and has become a comprehensive university integrating science, engineering, agriculture, economics, management, liberal arts, law and arts.

The university covers 196 hectares, with a building area of 870,000 square meters. It has 2,625 faculty members, 17,780 full-time undergraduate students, 3,626 graduate students, 1,143 preparatory students from ethnic minorities, and 194 international students.

Among its full-time teachers, 65 percent have senior professional titles, and 86 percent have master's degrees or above.

The university was one of the first approved by the Ministry of Education to accept foreign students. Since enrollment of international students began in 1992, it has attracted more than 2,000 international students from more than 40 countries, including South Korea, the United States, Egypt, Japan, Russia, Australia, Norway, Mexico, Sudan, Turkey and Kyrgyzstan.

It has one national key discipline, and one national first-class construction discipline. There are six first-level doctoral programs, 31 first-level master's programs and 15 professional master's programs.
